How did the RedZebras coach you?
“At a previous employer, I had attended a Management Training course run by the RedZebras. Their approach really appealed to me. I wanted to apply what I had learnt in the workplace. I soon realised that I could use some coaching in this respect. Over a couple of hours, in just four sessions, I practised extensively. For instance, I focused on how to conduct difficult conversations. This helped me enormously in terms of responding to unexpected situations and reacting to resistance from the team. From Hamid, I learned to call things what they are with clarity, to genuinely listen and ‘straighten out’ a sidetracked conversation to go back to a place of good energy.”
You’ve called on the RedZebras several times in your career. Which moment stands out to you?
“I was in a difficult situation with the director of the organisation. It was bothering me so much that I called Hamid on Saturday so I could see him on Sunday. That is, of course, special. So you see that the RedZebras are incredibly committed and fully flexible.
In an in-depth conversation, Hamid offered insights about myself that were a considerable influence on the conflict situation. He wondered: ‘Why are you so worried about this?’ Now, sure, that sounds like a simple question, but it was an enormous eye-opener for me. Therein was the key to the solution. Hamid helped me realise that the CEO is the boss and as such, he bears full responsibility. I was fighting that, but of course, it was pointless. Thanks to the RedZebras, I was able to let it go and say ‘good luck with it’.”
If I run into something in my work, I call the RedZebras.
Why would you recommend RedZebras?
“It is a small-scale, creative club with tremendous qualifications. The RedZebras are very sharp. They don’t just investigate skills—they consider character at a deeper emotional level, the influence it has and the important role it plays in your daily functioning. Hamid is a warm-hearted person who you know has nothing but your best interests at heart. In fact, he’s a philosopher of sorts, someone who pays attention to much more than reason alone and who’s extremely to-the-point. That provides depth and meaning that transcend daily practice. I benefited tremendously from what I learned from the RedZebras. If I run into anything troubling in my work, I call the RedZebras.”
